YouTube Views By Country/Continent

by Tass on Dec.12, 2010, under 5min, Random Stuff, Statistics, youtube

I was having 2 thoughts, and this is where they met. 1, what type of data have I not shared? 2, why does 5min only push ads to the US… and if they were to advertise elsewhere, where would it be most beneficial?

So I decided to do a bit of digging through Insight and compile lists of my views from the past 6 months based on where they came from. Insight is nice enough to break it down for you by USA, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Middle East… however this leaves off every other country in North American as well as every country that makes up Oceania (and possibly others?) Here’s my compiled list based on continent (mostly):

Interestingly, Europe trumps the US… but it’s also comparing 30 or so countries vs 1. What does make sense is that ~84% of my total views come from where you’d expect them to come from: US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and NZ. The overwhelming majority from the US and Europe alone. So, clearly, if 5min’s interests were directly in line with mine, they’d start focusing a lot of attention on Europe (and Canada).

To break things down further, I dug deeper and noted every country that has done at least 100,000 views over the past 6 months (sadly, I had to leave off Venezuela and Vietnam for being just under 100k, amongst others):

A pretty complete list… these 38 countries make up over 91% of my total views from the past 6 months. And, it makes it fairly clear which countries should specifically be targeted by a company like 5min: UK, Canada, and Australia are all english speaking countries that would add an additional 12% of coverage. If they’d be willing to tap into other languages, Germany, France, Brazil, and Poland are the dominant markets. Plus, they should be advertising in Israel since the company was founded there and still has offices there.

Well, this is another post that I doubt many will find interesting except for me… but, I guess that’s all that matters. Also, if you happen to read this and be from a country that isn’t on my list but still are curious how many views came from your country, post a comment and I’ll let you know!
