YouTube Views By Country/Continent

by Tass on Dec.12, 2010, under 5min, Random Stuff, Statistics, youtube

I was having 2 thoughts, and this is where they met. 1, what type of data have I not shared? 2, why does 5min only push ads to the US… and if they were to advertise elsewhere, where would it be most beneficial?

So I decided to do a bit of digging through Insight and compile lists of my views from the past 6 months based on where they came from. Insight is nice enough to break it down for you by USA, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Middle East… however this leaves off every other country in North American as well as every country that makes up Oceania (and possibly others?) Here’s my compiled list based on continent (mostly):

Interestingly, Europe trumps the US… but it’s also comparing 30 or so countries vs 1. What does make sense is that ~84% of my total views come from where you’d expect them to come from: US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and NZ. The overwhelming majority from the US and Europe alone. So, clearly, if 5min’s interests were directly in line with mine, they’d start focusing a lot of attention on Europe (and Canada).

To break things down further, I dug deeper and noted every country that has done at least 100,000 views over the past 6 months (sadly, I had to leave off Venezuela and Vietnam for being just under 100k, amongst others):

More Concrete Evidence On 5min’s Benefit

by Tass on Dec.05, 2010, under 5min, Personal, Statistics, youtube

I first started making money off my videos in April 09. From that time until 2.5 weeks ago, I had a total of 6 days over $xxx.xx (where that is an arbitrary number that I won’t share). In the past 16 days, my combined YT + 5min revenue has been at least $xxx.xx all 16 days (and will be over today as well).

Of those 6 prior days, my overall highest single day ever had been 137% of $xxx.xx. In the past 15 days, I’ve been over that 137% value 7 times (and may or may not be over it today… won’t know until tomorrow). That means my SEVEN best days ever, in almost 2 years, have all taken place in the past 15 days.

A Happy Tass I Am.

5min’s Got Problems, But eCPM Ain’t One

by Tass on Nov.24, 2010, under 5min, youtube

So I’ve addressed issues that I have with 5min… but let me affirm… the bottom line isn’t one of the problems I have. At a time when it’s taking roughly 2 weeks to get ads approved on my YouTube videos (current adless vids have over 150,000 views, just this time around)… it’s really nice to be getting this extra revenue from 5min.

The past few days have been better than normal, view-wise, thanks in part to Liquid Measure 2 bringing in a consistent 50k views/day. I’d say a typical day is 100-110k plays/day, but it’s been between 150-180k over the past 4-5 days. Not unheard of, but not the norm either. However, I had a record day, revenue wise, on Saturday because of the much higher eCPM from 5min. Saturday was about 260% of my typical day. And Sun, Mon, and Tues weren’t too shabby either. :)

Alas, this just makes me wish more sites would let me use 5min. Or that YouTube would stop their continued spiral into the abyss.

Initial Thoughts about 5min

by Tass on Nov.16, 2010, under 5min, armor games, youtube

So I’ve been starting to switch some of my embeds from YouTube to 5min. And I have mixed feelings.

Pros:
-Higher eCPM (60-100% higher, roughly)
-Fast approval time (not instantly… but if I ask, it gets moved up in the queue and approved within an hour; no idea how long the non-move-up takes)
-Great customer support (I get emails back quickly, answer my silly questions, etc etc)

Cons:
-Ads only monetized in the US (roughly 1/3 of my views) [this 1/3 is still earning me 60-100% more than YT though]
-Lot of sites I work with don’t like the pre-roll and won’t let me switch, and there’s no way to just display overlay ads.
-The entire 5min back-end is pretty crappy
—The uploader is a 1-at-a-time thing, that auto-fills part of the title and description (have to delete it each time), and has restrictions on # of tags and length of title.
—The analytics are basically non-existant
—The revenue reports are broken down into 2 different sections and they both keep defaulting to dates in October.
—No easy way (that I know of) to search through uploaded content… videos are just plopped all on 1 page (500+ of them)

Overall though, the money is enough to overlook the other stuff… if sponsors would allow me to switch the embeds. Which they aren’t doing. So far, only Armor has let me… the other large sponsors I work with all have said no. Which means about 35-50% of my views will start coming from 5min and the rest still on YT; I’ve done roughly 400,000 views on 5min since the start of the month vs 1.5 million on YT. However, I only have about 15 videos (covering about 8 or 9 games) switched to 5min.

It also seems that PlayedOnline is building a new section on their site specifically for my 5min vids (they’re the ones that asked 5min to reach out to me in the first place). So that’s pretty cool too. Will definitely have a post about it when it’s live.

What do you guys think about my 5min embeds? Compare Fragger on Armor vs Fragger on YouTube (both should have pre-roll).

An Interesting Phonecall

by Tass on Sep.08, 2010, under 5min, Personal, youtube

I was contacted last week by the site 5min.com, which is like YouTube… only much smaller, and focuses exclusively on short how-to type videos. They seem to include game walkthroughs as part of “how-to”, so I won’t complain. I was very intrigued to speak with them more about what they were offering, especially given my recent issues with YouTube.

So, it turns out, their business model is quite fascinating. Not only do they share revenue with the content providers (me)… they share revenue with the content embedders (sponsors). I don’t know the splits, and I don’t know all the details in regards to embeds on sites that they don’t have prior deals with… but it’s a VERY interesting concept, as it makes my service MUCH more desirable to sponsor sites (when the alternative is having a developer do it or them doing it themselves).

I have a follow-up with them next week. This could be a great next step in my business.

Still No Ads

by Tass on Sep.07, 2010, under Personal, youtube

It’s now the end of the 7th, and Saunavihta Vortex and Sieger still do not have ads enabled. That’s 7 and 5 days respectively. I understand there was a long weekend, so that’s only 4 and 2 work days… but that’s still a bit ridiculous. Those 4 vids total over 25,000 views so far. That’s 25k without ads. It’ll be even more by the time ads do finally get approved, which is a minimum of 12 hours from now.

*sigh*

edit: now over 55,000 views w/o ads, 12 hours later. email’d YT… let’s see if that does anything.
edit2: ads were approved, somewhere around the 80,000 views lost mark.

Pre-Roll Video Ads

by Tass on Sep.03, 2010, under youtube

Last week, YouTube opened up their video ad program to all partners. I’ve been waiting for this for over a year now, and have implemented video ads into about 100 of my videos. Unfortunately, video ads seem to be for on-YouTube views only… which means the 70% of my views that take place off-YouTube won’t have them.

If any of you have seen some of these ads appear since yesterday… what are your thoughts on them? Are they too intrusive? Will you still watch videos despite having to wait 15 seconds for them to load?

Tassistants Wanted

by Tass on Aug.26, 2010, under Personal, Random Stuff, Site Stuff, Walkthrough, youtube

From time to time I need assistance in creating the walkthroughs that I make. Either from lack of skill, time, whatever… reason isn’t important.

I have a large number of people who I trust that help me when all I need is a solution that I can duplicate after having it explained or shown to me. However, I only have a small number of people who are able to assist me should I need them to create raw video themselves.

That is what I’m looking for. To increase my list of possible assistants for whenever a project comes along that I need someone else to do the recording.

What you need to do:
-Email a resume to Tasselfoot@gmail.com explaining your gaming skills. Include accomplishments, badges earned, speedruns, etc. Examples of your videos are highly encouraged.
-Tell me a bit about yourself.
-You must demonstrate the ability to record both high quality video and in-game audio (not from a microphone).

What I’m offering:
-Sporadic paid contracted work. Either a flat per level fee or a CPM on the game’s video views.
-The chance to play games before they are released

Use the above email if you have any questions.

Top 100 Vids – Top Sponsors/Devs List Updated – July 2010

by Tass on Jul.08, 2010, under ArcadeTown, armor games, BubbleBox, Candystand, jmtb02, Joey Betz, kongregate, newgrounds, NinjaKiwi, NotDoppler, Statistics, Walkthrough, youtube

The original list is from February. A lot has changed since then. There are 17 new videos in the Top 100. The 100th video viewcount increased from 58k to 93k. Total views from the Top 100 has increased from 22 mil to 33 mil. But other things remain the same… Armor is well in first, with BubbleBox still solidly second. Joey Betz is still my top dev, but John Cooney and Eugene Karataev are gaining. And the % of views from the Top 100 has decreased from 81% to 76%.

Here is the data from Feb, side by side with the data from now:

Views are viewcount in thousands, Count is number of videos in the Top 100.
