Tasselfoot: An Origin Story

by Tass on Oct.07, 2011, under Personal, Random Stuff

I get asked all the time where I came up with my username. Apparently I’ve never explained it in a blog post before. So I’ll do that. Tasselfoot is a bastardization of the name of a character from Dragonlance. Dragonlance is a campaign world for Dungeon & Dragons that is most popular for its book series. That world is similar to many fantasy worlds… humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, mages, fighters, clerics, etc etc… however, there is a race that is completely unique to the planet Krynn (Dragonlance’s world).

Kender are small; similar in height to dwarves or gnomes… but thin like elves. What makes them different is their wanderlust and general level of curiosity and wonder about everything. They also have a penchant to “borrow” items that they find interesting, which often gets them into trouble. Kender are so curious that they are incapable of fear. But I digress (you can read up on everything Kender on the Kencyclopedia).

The most famous and well known Kender is named Tasslehoff Burrfoot. He’s my namesake. Back in high school (2001 or earlier, not sure when exactly anymore), I decided to change my main username, and I was a big D&Der at the time, and Tas (the shortened version of Tasslehoff in the books) was my favorite character. This is back when AOL/AIM limited you to 10 characters for a username still… so I did what I could to be creative in coming up with a Tas-related name. However, I didn’t double-check and accidentally flipped the L-and-E and made it Tasselfoot instead of Tasslefoot. Oh well. Tassel is the correct spelling of the stand-alone word, so I just say that I did it on purpose :D . Don’t tell anyone that I screwed up!

But that’s where my name comes from. If you like fantasy novels and are interested in a series that reads somewhat like a dumbed-down Lord of the Rings… I’d highly recommend reading the original Dragonlance books, the Chronicles trilogy (I’d read a few other books as well before reading the 4th Chronicles novel, such as the Legends trilogy). If you enjoy those, you can do the research to find out the order in which to read the hundreds of other Dragonlance novels in.
