YouTube Views by Country and Continent – June 2011

by Tass on Jun.21, 2011, under Spil Games, Statistics, youtube

I last posted about this in December 2010. It’s now been 6 months, so I’ve decided to look at the numbers again (as the last update was covering the 6 months from June 2010 – December 2010). I find the results to be very fascinating:

1) I think the difference between “Total” and “Worldwide” is because of Turkey; from what I’ve noticed, Turkey is not counted in either Europe or Asia… and the views from Turkey line up fairly well with the difference between the 2 values.
2) Note the decrease in US views, with the Worldwide views remaining fairly constant. My theory on this is 2-fold; a) I’ve been doing less work for ArmorGames, Kongregate, Bubblebox, and Candystand recently… which likely have very high US traffic. And b) I’ve had a ton of work for Spil Games’ network over the same period, who heavily focus on non-US, non-English-Speaking traffic.
3) US, Can/Mex, Europe, and Aus/NZ have decreased from 84% to 78%. Majority is still US and Europe, although that percentage has decreased as well.

Fun With Portals!

by Tass on Apr.19, 2011, under Game, mrrubix, Personal, Puzzle

I spent pretty much all day today playing Portal 2. Apart from lunch and bowling. And 90% of that time was spent doing co-op missions with my buddy MrRubix. It took about 7 hours, but we managed to beat the whole thing. Super fun and I highly recommend all of you play it with a friend!

Here’s a video I recorded of the final level of co-op. It comes complete with audio of both of us.

Mid-March Bowling Update

by Tass on Mar.19, 2011, under Bowling, Personal, Sports

Been a while since I posted about bowling. Have been fairly consistent over the past few months. Averaging 219 across both leagues… 216 in 1, 222 in the other. Had a 786 with a 289 last week. I broke my performance down by month and by game, which is kind of interesting:

High game: 290, Low game: 170. 21 games of 250+, 34 games sub-200.

And, below the fold you can find my full series data for the entire year:

Asked To Join Machinima Network

by Tass on Mar.04, 2011, under Personal, youtube

Don’t know what their qualifications are… whether it’s something unique, or whether i’m one of thousands to receive a stock e-mail… but Machinima emailed me about joining their YouTube network. I turned them down, but their offer was interesting.

Pros:
–Guaranteed $2 eCPM; in the email, this was stated as global views… but in the contract, it was stated as global views with ads (unlikely to be 100%).
–Possible extra promotion through Machinima’s 2 million subscribers.
–Instant ad approval and no oversight.

Cons:
–Locked in for 2 years under their sole control, with an option for them to extend it to 5 years ($2.50 eCPM in years 3-5). No ability for me to get out of it.
–Pre-roll ads on embeds, which is a big no-no for most of the sites I work with (otherwise I’d be using 5min more often!).
–Have to give up my YouTube password to Machinima so they can track my ads and whatnot.

In the end, the cons outweigh the pros. All 3 of the cons are very, very con… with #2 being an absolute deal breaker. #1 is also really bad, and #3 just rubs me the wrong way. Still, depending on how exclusive their network actually is… kinda cool to get the offer.

Bowled My Ass Off

by Tass on Jan.12, 2011, under Bowling, Personal

Just shot a 791. Best series ever.

1st game, 247: XXX 9- (left a weak 7-pin and then my foot slipped when i went to shoot the spare) X 9/ XXX XXX
2nd game, 290: 9/ (light mixer, all the pins shot to the right, none took out the 10-pin) XXXXXXXX XXX
3rd game, 254: XXXXXX 9/ (decent half-hit, messenger came across into the 7-pin but didn’t knock it down) 9/ (little too much hand, high hit, left 6-pin) 9/ (solid hit that was a bit flat, left a wobbling 5-pin) XX7

Needed either the 7th or 9th frame of the 3rd game to carry for an 800. Or not to have slipped on the 4th frame spare attempt of the 1st game… but who would have known I’d have had a shot at 800 at that point?

Overall, 17 strikes in a row between 2nd frame of 2nd game and 6th frame of 3rd game… that’s a record for me. 23 strikes in 24 throws is also a record (6 to end game 1, 10-pin in 1st frame of game 2, 17 in a row). I am pretty sad that I didn’t get my 1st 800, as I have no idea when I’ll ever have a night like tonight again… but I can’t be too upset with my best series ever. I got crazy good carry, although I was hitting high flush on almost all my shots… few half-hits that still easily carried out the 7-pin and a few high-hits that took out the 6 or 8 pin.

Bubble Tanks 3: Preview and Freebies!

by Tass on Dec.14, 2010, under armor games, Hero Interactive

Jared Riley, the main man behind Hero Interactive, was kind enough to give me a sneak preview of a 99% completed Bubble Tanks 3. The game features all of the exploration and tank destroying goodness of the 2 previous games while incorporating in the sexy editors from Arenas to allow for insane customization.

As Jared keeps telling me, and I agree, the best feature of BT3 is that every time you load the game up… you’ll be getting a new experience. BT3 won’t be a distribute-and-done game, oh no. The HI team will continue to create new content via Parts Packs that will add new bubbles, weapons, parts, enemies, etc. However, because this level of post-production development is time consuming, these parts packs will not be free. Expect about 1 a month, loaded with new content, for only $4.99 each.

To help promote tomorrow’s launch of the game on ArmorGames, Jared has given me 5 free parts packs to give away. You’ll need to do 2 things to win: 1) post a comment to this story today and 2) register an account at BubbleTanks. Do both of these, and you could be the proud owner of Bubble Tanks 3 Parts Pack 1 for FREE!

edit: winners are: domizcool, kranix, tardis, chimto, saiba. Congrats!

YouTube Views By Country/Continent

by Tass on Dec.12, 2010, under 5min, Random Stuff, Statistics, youtube

I was having 2 thoughts, and this is where they met. 1, what type of data have I not shared? 2, why does 5min only push ads to the US… and if they were to advertise elsewhere, where would it be most beneficial?

So I decided to do a bit of digging through Insight and compile lists of my views from the past 6 months based on where they came from. Insight is nice enough to break it down for you by USA, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Middle East… however this leaves off every other country in North American as well as every country that makes up Oceania (and possibly others?) Here’s my compiled list based on continent (mostly):

Interestingly, Europe trumps the US… but it’s also comparing 30 or so countries vs 1. What does make sense is that ~84% of my total views come from where you’d expect them to come from: US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and NZ. The overwhelming majority from the US and Europe alone. So, clearly, if 5min’s interests were directly in line with mine, they’d start focusing a lot of attention on Europe (and Canada).

To break things down further, I dug deeper and noted every country that has done at least 100,000 views over the past 6 months (sadly, I had to leave off Venezuela and Vietnam for being just under 100k, amongst others):

More Concrete Evidence On 5min’s Benefit

by Tass on Dec.05, 2010, under 5min, Personal, Statistics, youtube

I first started making money off my videos in April 09. From that time until 2.5 weeks ago, I had a total of 6 days over $xxx.xx (where that is an arbitrary number that I won’t share). In the past 16 days, my combined YT + 5min revenue has been at least $xxx.xx all 16 days (and will be over today as well).

Of those 6 prior days, my overall highest single day ever had been 137% of $xxx.xx. In the past 15 days, I’ve been over that 137% value 7 times (and may or may not be over it today… won’t know until tomorrow). That means my SEVEN best days ever, in almost 2 years, have all taken place in the past 15 days.

A Happy Tass I Am.

Flash Game Walkthrough With 1+ Mil Views, Dec 2010

by Tass on Dec.01, 2010, under Random Stuff, Statistics

I first compiled this list back in May, and felt it was time to update it. I followed the same procedure… typing Walkthrough into YouTube search and then going through page after page of videos. This time around, I limited it to 1+ million views in 5 or less videos, instead of allowing in walkthroughs done in 40 parts. The list has grown from 18 to 36 in the past 7 months:

Red Remover remains the dominant king, and the game’s Player Pack joins the ranks too. Poptropica has grown from 6 to 9 entries on the list. JohnnyK’s games have grown from 2 to 5 entries. We now have 2 “random” entries on the list… walkthroughs done for random flash games that aren’t the developer, sponsor, or me. Games done by me have grown from 8 to 14 entries.

The trend remains the same though… Poptropica, Phuzzles, Puzzle Platformers, and Physics. And we get to add a Point and Click to the list too, just to keep the ‘P’ genres intact. Oh, and as a note, I added in 5min views to games done by me.
