Top Sponsors/Devs List – Dec 2011

by Tass on Dec.20, 2011, under armor games, Spil Games, Statistics, youtube

This is the 4th post on this topic, every 6 months dating back to July 2010. It takes a look at my top 100 videos broken down by the sponsor and developer, including views on YouTube and 5min. Video #100 is up to 295k views and the top 100 now totals over 84 million views. There are 11 new videos in the top 100 this time around.

Armor remains #1, although Spil is gaining fast. Armor still has 1/3rd of the videos, but only increased by about 5 million total views. Spil went from 14 to 18 vids on the list and skyrocketed 13 million views. And we have 1 new sponsor on the list: ArcadeBomb.

Some big changes on the dev side however, almost all by PITon. He’s soared over 9 million views in the past 6 months to take a massive lead as the top dev. Joey lost 2 videos from the top100 and was passed by John. Nice gains also by Robin Vencel and gmentat.

Top Gaming Channels On YouTube

by Tass on Dec.03, 2011, under Game, Statistics, Top Gaming, youtube

Here’s a list of the top 34 gaming channels on YouTube. 34 is used arbitrarily, as I’m 34th. If you think I missed a gaming channel, let me know… if you think I included a channel that isn’t “gaming”, let me know.

I’ll be updating this once a month and keeping you guys up to date. :)

Top YouTube Channels By Genre

by Tass on Nov.29, 2011, under Statistics, youtube

I was really bored over the weekend, so I pulled a bunch of data off of SocialBlade for the top 600 YouTube channels based on their viewcount. I could have also gotten this data from VidStatsX, but for some reason VSX is missing a bunch of channels (I’m 576 on VSX but 598 on SB).

I broke each channel down into 1 genre, of: Music, Comedy, News, Game, TV, Trailers, Bollywood, Education, How To, Animation, Sports, 1-Hit Wonder, Film, and Blog. And looking back, I definitely made some mistakes on what genres to use. Bollywood should have just been part of Film… except Film is for people like Freddiew who make short films on YT. Animation and Education can often go together… as can Education and How To. Blog is hard to classify, as it’s often very similar to Comedy. TV covers a wide range of things, including a ton of Asian TV stations. News is a large catch-all that has the 3 big US networks, PhillyD, and even all the hollywood celeb news channels. Sports is almost all car channels. Even Music has lots of overlap, as I put XFactor there instead of TV, and there are many Animation channels that do songs as well.

Pretty much, it was really confusing and I did the best I could. Through the 1st 300 channels, Music accounted for over 50% of the total channels… but by 400, it had slipped under. The top 100 channels make up almost 90 billion total views. And those 100 channels have roughly the same viewcount as channels 101-500 combined. And, one of the other reasons I did this is that I wanted to track Gaming channels… and it turns out I’m currently the 34th most viewed one.

I don’t plan on updating this data any time soon, on the whole. If you’d like to see all the raw data of the 600 channels, let me know and I’ll be happy to share. I will be tracking the top gaming channels month-to-month… so expect more posts on that going forward.

Comment of the Day: Giooo1995

by Tass on Nov.13, 2011, under Comments, youtube

On my video for Snail Bob, Levels 1-10, user Giooo1995 said:

“i do evan better in games because i have alot of badges and if you want more you really have to go to kongergate it is the fun site where 1,000 people play there i know you have alot of badges to but if you wanto get more you have to be the world champion i know you are the world champion allready but if you wanto be the top world champion yo have to earn more badges all of us knnow that your the world champion but you need to be the top of the good players.”

Reading through the comment really hurt my head. I’ll cut the kid some slack though, as based on a video on his channel… he’s about 8. Still, it’s one hell of a run-on sentence with some quality content.

Views On A Month-To-Month Basis Since Jan 2008

by Tass on Nov.11, 2011, under Statistics

I was trying to come up with some new way of looking at my data last night, and this is the result. I went through YouTube’s Insight and noted my monthly views, starting with January 2008… when I only had 3 videos! From there, you can see my growth over time along with the ups and downs. Added into the totals for Nov 10 – May 11 is my monthly 5min.com view data (Jun 11 to present accounts for 150k-200k/mo, but I didn’t add them in).

Totals about 119 million views. Plus another 2 mil so far for Nov and another 1 mil for 5min across Jun-now gives ~122 million total views to date.

Now An IGN Partner!

by Tass on Oct.24, 2011, under IGN, youtube

This happened almost 2 months ago, but I’ve held off on posting about it…

To explain: On YouTube, there are now many ways to get ads on your videos: individual video partnerships, account monetization partnerships, and full partnerships. Then, if you’re a full partner, you can apply to become a content management system partner (CMS), which allows you to bring other channels into your partnership. These are commonly referred to as “content networks”. Machinima’s is the largest… and I talked about them wanting me to join their network months ago. But TheGameStation, Yeousch, IGN, and others also have networks.

For many gaming channels, joining a content network is the only way to monetize your videos. This ranty video explains why. However, for me, as a full partner already… I could be choosy with joining a network. IGN contacted me in August, asking me to join. I was hesitant, but always open to listen. I liked their offer and terms, as they appeared to only provide value and have no potential downside. So I accepted.

I’ve seen my numbers for September, and so far things are as I expected: I’ve gone from ~10 subscribers a day to ~70 and my eCPM increased about 20%. Not too bad for having to change absolutely nothing about my operations. I can only hope that they continue along these lines, and that I don’t have another 5min situation (where things are good for 1-2 months and then start sucking).

I’ll keep you guys updated if anything fun happens through IGN. And I’ll have some stat updates soon as well.

by Tass on Jul.13, 2011, under 5min, Flash, Game, Statistics, Walkthrough, youtube

Yesterday I broke 100 million views all time, between both YouTube and 5min. Roughly 90.5 million on YT and 9.5 on 5min.

Thanks so much to all the gamers out there who have watched my vids, as well and the developers and sponsors of the thousands of amazing flash games I’ve played in the past 9 years.
